Welcome to Glasgow Antiques and Fine Arts Society

Known as GAFAS, we are proud to be an independent art organisation which has been going strong since 1973. We have about 400 members and gather on the third Wednesday of the month ‘twixt  September and June (excluding January) to listen to distinguished speakers from across the UK and beyond presenting talks on a very wide range of subjects.

We have been without a President since the sad death in 2019 of the eminent and illustrious Alistair Auld, formerly Director of Glasgow Museums and Art Galleries but I am now delighted to announce the Evelyn Silber has graciously agreed to be our new President. A previous Director of the Hunterian, she has served as Chair of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society where she is now Vice Chair, is a member of the Historic Environment Advisory Panel for Scotland and Chair of the Treasure Trove Panel.

Meetings are held in the spectacular Trades Hall of Glasgow, 85 Glassford Street, Glasgow G1 1UH.  Doors are open from 10.00 am with meetings starting promptly at 10.30. Meetings are free for members, £10.00 for non-members and £5.00 for full-time students upon production of their student ID card.

In addition to the talks, we have Spring & Autumn outings, Christmas drinks and regular ‘Spotlight’ groups. These are small informal groups where like-minded members can get together for a morning to focus on a wide variety of topics. Current examples include embroidery and the Colourists.

Our annual subscription is currently £50 and new members are very welcome: if you require any further information, please email Lynn Dow, our Administrator on glasgowfineartsociety1973@gmail.com.
