Children’s Book Illustration

John Ericson

Synopsis

As adults, some of the most deeply etched images are illustrations from our favourite books of childhood. ‘Tigger’ and ‘Toad’ as drawn by E.H. Shepard will remain with many of us for ever, along with pictures from classics such as Black Beauty, The Knights of the Round Table, Treasure Island, or even The Tiger Who Came to Tea, which we may have read to our grandchildren!  In this colourful and nostalgic lecture, John shows how the interaction of image and narrative creates such powerful memories, and compare different styles of illustration from simple line drawing to photo-realism. We will also look at the intriguing lives of famous illustrators such as Beatrix Potter, Howard Pyle and Arthur Rackham.
