In 1952, Glasgow bought one of Salvador Dalí’s best known, and certainly the most important painting of his late career. 75 years on, the painting is recognised as one of the museums’ greatest treasures, but at the time this purchase was seen as bold, radical, and even foolish. It was thanks to the efforts of the then Director of Glasgow Art Gallery, T.J Honeyman, and his great connections with the art world, including Dalí himself, that Glasgow was able to acquire the painting. This talk, drawing on fresh research, will explore the painting from multiple angles, offering an insight into the many factors that contributed to its creation, importance, and its momentous purchase.
Pippa Stephenson-Sit
Pippa Stephenson-Sit is Senior Curator for French Art at the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh. Prior to this role, Pippa was Curator of European Art at Glasgow Museums for 13 years, and one of the first two Curatorial Trainees at the National Gallery, London. Pippa has extensively researched Dalí and continues to be interested in his French connections. Pippa is currently writing a book on Dali which will be published in 2027.
