an Accidental Introduction to 18th century ceramics and to the works of William Hogarth
Lars Tharp

William Hogarth was an English painter, engraver, social moraliser and occasional writer on art. 260 years after his death, gone but certainly not forgotten, Lars will be taking us on a lively trip through Hogarth’s exuberant career documenting the lives of people at all levels of society from the highest to the lowest which, through his racy narratives – The Harlot, The Rake and Marriage-à-la-Mode, offered a moral commentary on the pursuit of Taste and Luxury.
Hogarth’s career also coincided with a critical moment in England’s ceramic revolution, an area that Lars, as an eminent ceramics historian will be bringing to life in his own inimitable way.

Lars Tharp is a Danish-born ceramics historian, lecturer and broadcaster and a familiar face on tv on a Sunday night courtesy of BBC’s Antiques Roadshow. An experienced auctioneer, past director of Sotheby’s and curator and museum director of the Foundling Museum in London, he has his own consultancy business, specialising in ceramics and oriental works of art.
