Dolls Houses – Members Only meeting

Amanda Herries

17th December 2025 @10.30am

From their early days as educational aids and indicators of status over 300 years ago, European ‘Baby Houses’ have held a special fascination. With furnishings created by master guildsmen recording domestic life that has long gone they are an historic record, often with extraordinary exactness, and laced with special charm.  The lecture includes an overview of the history of dolls houses, focussing on 18th century Dutch and English creations.  As it covers the 20th century transition from thing to be admired to thing to be played with it will also include mention of Queen Mary’s Dolls House and Titania’s Palace.

With a degree in archaeology, Amanda was a curator at the Museum of London for a decade, specialising in the 18th to 20th centuries. After a sojourn in Japan with her family, she returned to the UK and amongst many other things, has spent three years cataloguing over 2500 oil paintings for Southern Scotland for the ArtUK project.

The talk will be followed by wine, soft drinks and mince pies and is limited to members of GAFAS.
