‘Visions of Vesuvius’ – Vesuvius and Naples in Art

An ‘explosive’ lecture that starts and continues with a visual bang, exploring British connections with the dramatic volcanic backdrop of the city of Naples. From the 18th century onwards, it was the British who became the most enthusiastic of all volcanic visitors, climbing the slopes during eruptions and studying the newly-discovered cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, buried by the eruption of AD79. The cast of characters involved in the story – both residents and visiting artists – is almost as colourful as the volcano itself.
